The very first thing you'll want to ask about, whether you're thinking of hiring me or any other musician, is whether you can hear them play in person. Think about it... would you buy your wedding cake without tasting it first? It's the same with live music - you want to make sure the musician you are hiring sounds the same in person as they do on a recording.
Secondly, you'll want to inquire about their level of experience and musical background. If you're on a budget, this may not be as important to you than saving money, but consider that playing for weddings requires special skills that have to be developed over time. It is not enough to simply be able to play background music; an experienced ceremony musician will also be able to easily modify the length of the music to accommodate the size of the wedding party. Professional musicians should have no trouble improvising on the spot if necessary to cover any unexpected occurrences (for example, wandering flower girls or ring bearers).
In addition to the above questions, you should ask what type of harp the harpist plays for weddings. There two main types of harps: concert grand harps and folk harps. Most people expect to see a full-sized, concert grand harp at weddings (this is the same harp used in orchestras). This harp is extremely versatile, and lends itself well to a wide variety of musical styles: classical, pop, jazz, rock, folk, etc. I will automatically assume, unless you specify otherwise, that you would like me to play on a concert grand harp. I also play the folk harp, and can bring that instrument instead for a reduced fee if requested. However, this harp is not as versatile and much of the repertoire I am able to play on the concert grand harp cannot be played on the folk harp.
In 2009, I played between 2-4 wedding ceremonies each month on average (in addition to playing for many other events and concerts). At this point in my career, I have played for over two hundred weddings. It is absolutely true that no wedding is ever alike - but I have the expertise and experience to deal with a variety of situations as they arise. In addition to over 15 years performing, my professional credentials include a Masters degree in Harp Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Music. I also have a 100% success rate of being booked on the spot by couples who have met with me in person to hear me play.
